Google Analytics Intelligence Alerts

by Josh Curcio 1. December 2009 09:32

In today’s busy world, not everyone can check their analytics on a daily basis to ensure all is going well on the site. If your site is down…hopefully one of your loyal visitors will notify you, but that is not always the case. To help you monitor your website traffic to ensure nothing fishy is going on, Google has released Intelligence in Beta form within Google Analytics. Intelligence allows you to create custom alerts on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. For example, if you want an alert when your site receives no visits on any particular day, you can create an alert that will send you an email notifying you of the situation. This will give you a slight jump on contacting your hosting provider before you lose too much traffic.

Google has also provided several alert templates that are very easy to copy/modify in your alert list. Some of these alert templates include:

  • Total visits decreases by more than 50%
  • Unique visitors decreases by more than 50%
  • Average bounce rate increases by more than 50%
  • Goal conversion rate decreases by more than 50%

In less drastic cases as mentioned in my previous example, many of these pre-made templates can be very useful. For example if you see a drastic change in a specific goal day-over-day, there may be something wrong with your checkout process, email sign-up sheet, etc. depending on your conversions. To make things even easier, Google has created automatic alerts that will send you alerts if atypical traffic patterns arise as long as you opt-in to receive these alerts.

This is a great free tool to use as an aid in monitoring your everyday web traffic and site usage. I have incurred any problems with intelligence, but remember it is still in Beta and should not be an excuse to completely ignore your metrics.

Estimate Search Engine Position With Google Analytics

by Josh Curcio 7. January 2009 03:19

In an article at Yoast.com entitled Track SEO Rankings with Google Analytics, the author gives detailed instructions on how to make Google Analytics track your search engine rank. The data that this feature provides will show which keyword is searched/clicked and the number of the first listing for that SERP. For example if 'tire iron' shows up on the 3rd listing of Page-3 it will show "Page: 20" meaning the 3rd SERP. Here is an example of the report provided by Yoast:

Check out the full article so that you can set up your Google Analytics to provide  you with this data. Obviously there are other ways to get search engine ranks, but they are not available to everyone and sometimes inaccurate. This is a free way to not only enhance reporting and analysis, but also know which keywords you should focus on with your SEO efforts.

Flash Tracking for Everyone

by Josh Curcio 18. November 2008 02:28

Yesterday the Google Analytics team announced that flash tracking will be available to all Google Analytics users. This is great news for businesses that cannot afford complex tracking packages that will track flash for you and the new feature has the ability to give you all the information you need to know. You can answer the following questions:

How many people watched the flash video?

Are you developing the right creative to attract new users?

Is my content effective enough to get people to take action?

In my opinion this is a step in the right direction for Google Analytics. They have also left the program open source so that developers can tweak the program for personalized use. GA has been the go-to analytics program for so many users with small budgets and has proved itself to be quite reliable. With the announcement of the new Yahoo! Web Analytics tool which provides real-time "enterprise level data" for free to customers, Google had to create something else to keep users from straying away from the program. After all, real-time tracking is quite appealing. Yahoo has not said whether or not flash tracking will be available in their new tool, but if not this will give users another reason to think about stacking their tracking packages.

Check out the entire Google Analytics announcement from the official Google Analytics Blog.
